The new ford electric truck F-150 Lightning is arguably the biggest revelation for Ford, and the car industry in particular. Trims and Pricing
The ford f150 lightning electric truck‘s price has increased this year by $12,000 for the base Pro model, which is the only item that has changed. Less abrupt but still significant price changes apply to higher-end trims: the loaded Platinum ford electric truck price now costs $6000 more, the XLT is up $6500, and the mid-range Lariat is up $7000. These pricing hikes are a result of “ongoing supply-chain restrictions, rising material costs, and other market considerations,” a Ford representative told Car & Driver. In other words, prices are skyrocketing because there is a huge demand for Lightnings and a limited supply.
We would still choose the more coveted and well-equipped XLT trim despite the price increase over the model from last year. The Extended-Range battery pack raises the ford electric truck price by $10,000 all at once, but if you intend to tow or drive long distances, it might be a wise purchase. Unfortunately, you also need to buy the pricey 312A High package to the XLT model in order to add that larger battery. Fortunately, that package comes with a ton of desirable features to make up for its high cost, such as adaptive cruise control, Ford’s Pro Power Onboard generator, heated front seats and steering wheels, a power-operated tailgate, in-dash navigation, and many other things.
Engine and Performance
All F-150 Lightning electric ford truck models come equipped with all-wheel drive and two electric motors. The motors’ combined output is 452 horsepower with the Standard-Range battery and 580 horsepower with the Extended-Range battery; either configuration’s maximum torque is an astonishing 775 pound-feet. For a truck this massive, performance is impressive. In under 4.0 seconds, the Lightning Platinum we tested hit 60 mph. At 107 mph, it completed a quarter-mile in 12.7 seconds.
We were thrilled with the Lightning’s, well, lightning-quick acceleration as well as pleasantly surprised by how well it kept the conventional F-150’s upscale driving manners. A lower center of gravity that helps control body roll and independent rear suspension in favor of the gas model’s solid rear axle make the Lightning’s ride and handling more comfortable, if anything.
Towing and Payload Capacity
In order to demonstrate that a prototype of the electric pickup could tow a 1,000,000-pound line of train cars filled with F-150s, Ford staged an event in July 2019. Only ford truck electric equipped with the optional Extended-Range battery can pull more than 10,000 pounds, which is the official maximum towing capability of the production model. The maximum capacity for Standard-Range battery versions is 7700 pounds. The Standard-Range model has a payload capacity of up to 2000 pounds, while the Extended-Range has a payload capacity as low as 1800 pounds. The range of our Lightning Platinum plummeted to just 100 miles at 70 mph while towing a 6100-pound double-axle camper trailer.
Charging and Battery Life
Ford claims that the larger 131.0-kWh pack increases the driving range to 320 miles, while the smaller 98.0-kWh battery increases it to 230 miles. The Lightning Platinum was able to travel 230 miles on our 75 mph highway range test. Customers will be able to charge their F-150 Lightnings at home using 110- and 220-volt outlets, but the truck can also be recharged at public DC fast-charging locations, and Ford claims it can do it in 44 minutes and go from 15 to 80 percent of battery capacity. A completely charged vehicle, according to Ford, can provide up to three days’ worth of electricity for the typical household during a power outage. The F-150 Lightning ford truck electric was also designed to function as a backup generator.
The F-150 Lightning Extended-Range is capable of up to 78 MPGe city driving and 63 MPGe on the highway, according to the EPA. Standard-Range vehicles are marginally less efficient, with 76 MPGe city driving and 61 MPGe on the highway. We only measured 54 MPGe while using the Lightning Platinum.
Cargo, Interior, and Comfort
The inside of the F-150 Lightning is very similar to that of the standard F-150 pickup truck, with a few notable variations including the extra-large touchscreen screen and the spacious front-trunk cargo area. The single variant of the F-150 Lightning is a crew cab with a 5.5-foot bed. Speaking of roomy, the F-150 Lightning has a sizable front trunk (frunk) that can accommodate up to 400 pounds of additional stuff by taking up the space where the engine would normally be located in the standard F-150.
Connectivity and Infotainment
Standard equipment includes a 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Ford’s newest Sync 4 software, but Lariat and Platinum models have an even bigger 15.0-inch screen. Standard features include in-dash navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Ford will use its relationship with Bang & Olufsen to provide two distinct premium stereo systems as optional extras, one with eight speakers in the Lariat and one with 18 speakers in the Platinum.
Numerous driver-assistance systems are included as standard equipment, and ford electric truck‘s new BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving mode is also available. Important safety elements include:
